The 2017-2018 15U Fargo Freeze team entered the NDAHA High School State Championship weekend (March 2-4) in Grand Forks seeded 4th out of 12 teams from across ND and eastern MT. Having earned an initial round bye, the team made up of predominantly 8th grade girls from across Fargo, took on 5th ranked Minot on Friday afternoon. Ending regulation time tied 2-2, Fargo went on to win on a sudden death overtime goal by Olivia Opheim, giving her a hat trick for the game and earning the win for Fargo.
Saturday saw Fargo matched up as the underdog against the top seeded, and last years State Championship team, Richland, MT. Richland jumped to quick 2-0 lead over Fargo with both goals coming within the first 5 minutes of the game. Fargo responded with a goal of their own in the first to get a spark and would carry that momentum to the end, shutting out Richland the remainder of the way and gathering a 4-2 win to propel them to the Championship tilt.
The puck dropped at noon Sunday with Fargo taking on 2nd seeded Bismarck for the title. Fargo threw a complete game shutout at the Bismarck Capitals and took home the 2017/2018 NDAHA High School State Championship winning 2-0 in regulation. Opheim again had the game winner and Alexus Kinney stood strong in goal stopping 40 shots to complete the tournament with 97 minutes of shutout hockey between the last two games of the championship season.
